Bachelor of Arts University Kansas, 1939. Master of Arts, Doctor of Philosophy Harvard University, 1942, 1946.
Early work on the development of modern portfolio theory, and the so-called ‘capital asset pricing model’. Later work incorporated diverse information sets and probability assessments, restrictions on short selling and the absence of a riskless asset. Also identified an important risk-eliminating as well as a risk-sharing function of capital markets.
Earlier work on corporate savings behaviour developed the model of dividend policy which is still standard, and examined the effects of taxes on corporate growth and merger activity. Later work includes both theoretical and empirical studies of inflation on security returns. George Gund Professor Economics Business Administration, Harvard University, 1964-1984.
