Appointed to 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment in Ireland. Transferred to 2nd Battalion of the same Regiment in India, serving in Punjab and North-West Provinces, and holding the appointments of Station Staff Officer at Amritsar and Murree (Hill Station). Owing to an accident at the School of Musketry was compelled to retire from active service, and accepted a commission in the Army Pay Department. 2nd Baronet, cartulary-register 1898; Lieutenant-Colonel and Staff Paymaster, Army Pay Department.
