Maeda is the author of great number of books. His first book Reactive Square was published in 1995. In addition to writing and teaching, Maeda designs interactive designs that Hall dubbed both “playful and enchanting,” citing a promotion for the Japanese cosmetics firm Shiseido that features a digital fireworks display that highlights the company’s current offerings when prompted by a customer’s use of the computer mouse. He has also designed numerous posters, booklets, and other graphic works. His graphic design work has been exhibited in Tokyo, New York, and Paris and is in permanent collections at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum at the Smithsonian Institution, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the New York Museum of Modern Art.
Maeda worked as a Graphic/technology designer and educator. He also was an assistant at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then associate professor of design and computation, associate director of MIT Media Laboratory and director of Aesthetics and Computation Group. John was appointed as a Lecturer at schools, including Princeton University, Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Royal College of Art.
