Ordained priest R.C. Church at Louvain, April 14, 1900. Appointed professor Greek and Latin, St. Thomas’ Preparatory Seminary, Hartford, September 1, 1900. Chancellor Diocese of Hartford, October 5, 1903.

Titular bishop of Flavias and auxiliary to the bishop of Hartford, November 15, 1919. Consecrated April 28, 1920. Transferred to the See of Portland, Maine, May 29, 1925, installed as bishop of Portland at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, October 12, 1925.

Appointed archbishop of St. Paul, October 29, 1931, installed at Cathedral of St. Paul, January 27, 1932.
