Career
In 1913, he returned to Nova Scotia and practised law in a firm. While serving Legal Advisor, he was involved in the Trail Smelter dispute. He acted for Canada in disputes such as the I'M ALONE case, seizing opportunities to extend Canada's legal independence. He was known as an expert in constitutional and international law, and was famous for his progressive views.
