He was educated in the city of New York, and at the age of sixteen began architectural study as an apprentice to the late William Hurry.
In 1846 Mr. Ritch started practice in New York, and under his own name planned several Banking houses, hospitals, stores and residences, although actual record of his various works is lacking.
He was a charter member of the American State of Architects in 1857. Mr. Rich was elected the first Treasurer of the A.I.A., served two years in that office, also was a member of the National Board ot Directors from 1857 to 1861.
