John E. Rotelle was born on January 18, 1939, in Ambler, Pennsylvania, United States. He was a son of Mariano Rotelle, a salesman, and Esther (Veneziale) Rotelle, a housewife.
In 1956, John finished Malvern Preparatory School, Malvern, Pennsylvania, and entered the novitiate at New Hamburg, New York. John professed first vows on September 10, 1957 and solemn vows on September 10, 1960.
In 1961, he graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. Later, Rotelle continued his studies at the Augustinian International College of St. Monica in Rome, where he was ordained to the priesthood on February 20, 1965, and received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree the same year from the college.
Also, in 1965, Rotelle did his German Language Studies at the University of Vienna. Bewteen 1965-1966, he studied Liturgy at Pontifical Atheneum of St. Anselm in Rome.
While a student in Rome, during the Second Vatican Council and later, Rotelle participated in the Church's liturgical reform, which included the translation of texts for the "Sacramentary" and the "Liturgy of the Hours", and worked at the International Committee on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). For the rest of his life, John continued working in those areas, translating and publishing texts from the Church Fathers, especially Saint Augustine, and writers, who are a part of Augustinian heritage.
In 1969, Rotelle became a Director of Students at the International College of Saint Monica. Between 1970-1974, he held the same post at Augustinian College, in Washington, D.C.
In 1977, John resided at Austin Friars Hall, where he held a post of the second counselor and sacristan. In 1982, he was appointed a Province Director of Communications and a member of the Augustinian Community in Overbrook, Pennsylvania.
In 1983, Rotelle moved to Saint Thomas Monastery, Villanova, where he lived until 1985, when he was made a member of Saint John Stone Friary, Villanova. In 1983, John also became a Director of Augustinian Press. Later, from 1994 until his death in 2002, he served as a Secretary of the Province at the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova in Pennsylvania.
During his lifetime, John was a member of an international network of translators and publishers of Liturgical and Patristic works and worked to introduce the early Church writers to a worldwide English-speaking audience.
Moreover, he lectured at different educational establishments, including Villanova University, Patristic Institute Augustinianum, Catholic University of America and others.
