( "...suddenly the most commonplace objects came to have ...)
"...suddenly the most commonplace objects came to have for me such significance that they no longer existed as just objects, but as shape and form in space."--Henry Moore. One of the world's greatest sculptors and a renowned photographer--close friends for thirty years--combine forces to provide insight into what makes a great creative artist. Part personal history and part stunning presentation of Moore's work and inspirations, striking photographs show his major sculptures and collected art, as well as the landscape and natural forms that indelibly influenced him. Compare Moore's own sculpted masks with the African and Mexican tribal pieces he so admires, or his figures--filled with energy--with Hedgecoe's nude studies. Close-ups focus in on small, fine details. Plus: a treasured glimpse of Moore in his workshop. 208 pages (16 in color), 230 b/w illus., 8 1/8 x 11 3/8.

Shortly after Francis Bacon died, one photographer was granted access to work undisturbed for days on end to produce this riveting record of the Kensington mews house in which Francis Bacon lived and worked for much of his life. In the studio itself, thirty years of inspired artistic endeavour had accumulated in tangible form - the last unfinished painting on the easel; the slashed, discarded canvases on the floor; brushes and paints; photographs of friends and models; pages torn from magazines and books that served visual stimulus for his work; doors and walls that seem to have been inpromptu palettes. Published now for the first time, together with photographs of Bacon's living quarters, kitchen and bedroom, his bookshelves stacked high with Aeschylus, T.S. Eliot and other volumes, trousers draped over a chair, a fractured mirror broken in who knows what incident, this is an astonishing document. Straightforwardly presented, it gives us the sense of having been invited in by Bacon as if he has briefly gone out to buy his newspapers. Some of those close to Bacon during his lifetime believe that his studio and its contents was an heroic statement, in the mould of Duchamp's great work Elant Donnes, secretly constructed over many years to distil and give final form to his intentions as an artist.

( The first comprehensive research guide and bibliography...)
The first comprehensive research guide and bibliography to the large literature surrounding the life and work of one of the 20th century's greatest artists, this volume includes information on more than 1,100 books and articles as well as a chronology, biographical sketch, and list of exhibitions. The secondary bibliography is arranged by topic and includes citations on the artist's life and career, his relationships with contemporary artists (notably Picasso), his influence on subsequent artists, his work in diverse artistic media as well as his oeuvre in general, iconography, and more. While concentrating on printed materials, this guide also includes selected manuscripts and audio-visual materials. Following a biographical sketch and chronology, the primary bibliography lists articles, essays, letters, interviews, manuscripts, and sketchbooks of Braque. The main part of the secondary bibliography lists monographs, catalogues, dissertations, theses, periodical articles, films, and selected newspaper articles. Substantial book reviews and exhibition reviews are also cited. Arranged by topic, this bibliography includes citations on Braque's career and development as an artist, his relationships with contemporary artists, a section on Braque/Picasso, his influence on other artists, his work in various media including paintings, drawings, prints, illustrated books, papiers decoupes, sculpture, jewelry, theatre designs, and other commissions. Georges Braque first came to world attention as Picasso's friend during the formative years of Cubism. Long overshadowed by his more famous contemporary, in the quarter-century after his death Braque is beginning to be evaluated accurately. Major retrospective exhibitions over the past decade, accompanied by a considerable body of new criticism and scholarship, have brought Braque into the spotlight.

When Seurat first exhibited his Bathers at Asni_res in 1884, it perplexed but fascinated the few critics who noticed it. Today the picture is one of the most famous and popular works in the world. Yet the extraordinary appeal of this painting is not easily defined. In Seurat and the Bathers the authors discuss the various choices Seurat made with regard to subject, format, and technique in preparing this monumental painting.

(Georges Seurat died in 1891, aged only 32, and yet in a c...)
Georges Seurat died in 1891, aged only 32, and yet in a career that lasted little more than a decade he revolutionized technique in painting, spearheaded a new movement, Neoimpressionism, and bought a degree of scientific rigour to his investigations of colour that would prove profoundly influential well into the 20th century. As a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Seurat read Chevreul's 1839 book on the theory of colour and this, along with his own analysis of Delacroix' paintings and the aesthetic observations of scientist Charles Henry, led him to formulate the concept of Divisionism. This was a method of painting around colour contrasts in which shade and tone are built up through dots of paint (pointillism) that emphasise the complex inter-relation of light and shadow. Two paintings more than any others reflect his investigations in this area - 1884's "Bathers at Asnieres" and 1886's "A Sunday Afternoon at the Ile de La Grande Jatte". Their impact was immediate and enormous. Opposed to any popularization of his theories, he only relented in 1890 and agreed to the publication of a summary volume. However, by then he had just a year to live.

During his lifetime, Francis Bacon maintained that he painted directly onto canvas without the benefit of preparatory studies. Since his death in 1992, however, several groups of works on paper have come to light, offering amazing new insights into Bacon's working methods and personal obsessions. "Bacon's Eye" showcases a unique collectiion of works on paper that were bundled up and given by the artist to his friend Barry Joule just prior to his death. This collection includes a remarkable album of 70 oil sketches that relate to his work from the '50s and '60s, as well as over 900 "working documents": images torn from books, magazines and newspapers that have been painted and sketched over, revealing an artist's-eye-view of some of the most important people and events of the 20th century. As of yet, these works have not been officially recognized as being by Bacon. Permission to to show these works alongside finished paintings was denied by the Bacon Estate. The gallery, 21 Publishing, and a host of Bacon experts firmly believe in the authenticity of these works. This book, along with an exhibition at the Barbican Gallery in London, are a means of allowing the public to judge for itself. Edited by Georgia Mazower. Foreword by John Hoole. Introduction by Mark Sladen. Essay by Mark Sladen. 116 color and 6 b&w. 9.25 x 12 in.
