John Serafin was born on November 3, 1942 in Washington, D. C., United States; the son of John Bernard Serafin and Elizabeth (Pichette) Serafin.
Serafin received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Utah in 1971. Three years later he earned his Master of Science degree in Urban Education from Syracuse University.
Serafin began his career as a graphic artist at Sears, Roebuck and Company in 1967. Two years later he took a position of a director of advertising in Around Town Magazine. Then in 1971, John became an art teacher at Syracuse City School District, where he worked for thirty five years. In 2009, he moved to Phoenix, where he resided and continued to paint. John has had shows in galleries in New York City and in Syracuse.

Serafin chose to paint in oils, acrylics, and watercolors but did not rely solely on these as he used mixed media.
Serafin was a member of New York State United Teachers, Syracuse Teachers Association, Allied Artists of New York, National Art Educators Association, Syracuse University Alumni Association, Crimson Club U. Utah Alumni association and Cooperstown Art Association.
On April 12, 1969 John Serafin married Josephine Azzarello, with whom he divorced in 1990. The marriage produced three children.
