Career
John Smallbones went to London in 1871 where he commenced business in partnership with F. Barber in 1881. He traveled to Australia and New Zealand on behalf of the firm in 1888. What is more, he traveled extensively around Australia, the South Sea Islands, America, Canada. Several times he visited South Africa making the trip from Cape Town through Rhodesia to Beira and back via coast ports. Smallbones visited the Far East in 1912 on behalf of a British Syndicate to learn the method of doing business. After the war began, he stayed in the East and joined the Shanghai Municipal Council service in 1914.

John Smallbones married Annie, daughter of J. Lewis Grant in Blackheath in 1880. His second wife was Mary, daughter of Henry Wood. They married in London in 1883. The third wife was Florence, daughter of Henry Proctor. They married in Kent in 1916.
