Stewart, a lifelong resident of Granville, New York, was a baseball player for Granville Central Junior.-Senior High School, where he graduated from in 1982.

As a senior, he went 10–0 with 187 strikeouts in the season. Stewart was offered a minor league contract from the Chicago Cubs upon graduating high school, but opted to attend Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Technical). While at Georgia Technical, he led the nation with 12.3 strikeouts per game.
In 1986, Stewart was drafted with the 602nd pick of the amateur entry draft by the Atlanta Braves.
Stewart pitched for six years in the Braves system before being released, never moving beyond the class American Automobile Association level After a minor league career with Atlanta being invited to MLB camp 3 times he played 1 season in Japan for the Hawks.
In 1992 Stewart became a coach and scout for the Braves. Stewart was an area scout and crosschecker until 2003 then taking a professional scouting job with Atlanta until 2016 presently a scout for the San Diego Padres.
