Background
John Stewart Service was born on August 3, 1909, in Chengtu, China. He was the son of Grace Josephine (Boggs) and Robert Roy Service, missionaries working for the Y.M.C.A.
Service attended the Shanghai American School for high school.
The Service family moved to California, where John graduated from Berkeley High School in Berkeley, California at the age of fifteen.
In 1927, Service entered Oberlin College.

Service began a career with the U.S. Foreign Service in the 1930s. Service occupied posts in China and later wrote about his work there (Lost Chance in China). While he was dismissed in 1951 from his post, the Supreme Court reinstated him in 1957. Service observed that many of his peers had fared worse then him and had been forced into menial jobs during their dismissals.
He died of heart disease on February 3, 1999, in Oakland, California.
