John Joseph Travolta is a Golden Globe-winning American actor, producer, dancer and singer who was a cultural icon of the 1970s, especially known for roles in the TV series Welcome Back, Kotter and the blockbuster film Saturday Night Fever. He had a career revival in Quentin Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' and has starred in a wide range of additional projects.
Background
Ethnicity:
His father was of Italian descent and his mother was of Irish ancestry.
John Joseph Travolta was born on February 18, 1954, in Englewood, New Jersey. The youngest of six children born into a family of entertainers, he grew up in an Irish-American neighbourhood and has said that his household was predominantly Irish in culture. His father, Salvatore Travolta, was a semi-professional American football player turned tire salesman and partner in a tire company. His mother, Helen Cecilia (née Burke), was an actress and singer who had appeared in The Sunshine Sisters, a radio vocal group, and acted and directed before becoming a high school drama and English teacher. His siblings, Joey, Ellen, Ann, Margaret, and Sam Travolta, have all acted.
Education
Travolta's mother enrolled her son in Dwight Morrow High School, where he studied voice, dancing and acting. There, John decided to combine all three of these skills and become a musical comedy performer, however, he dropped it out as a junior at age 17 in 1971.
John Travolta started his acting career in a summer stock production of the musical "Bye Bye Birdie." After that, he moved to New York City and worked regularly in summer stock and on television commercials. When work became scarce in New York, he went to Hollywood and appeared in minor roles in several series. A role in the national touring company of the hit 1950s musical "Grease" brought him back to New York. An opening in the New York production of "Grease" gave him his first Broadway role at age 18. After "Grease", he became a member of the company of the Broadway show "Over Here", which starred The Andrews Sisters. After ten months in "Over Here", he decided to try Hollywood once again. Once back in Hollywood, he had little trouble getting roles in numerous television shows. He was seen on The Rookies (1972), Emergency! (1972) and Medical Center (1969) and also made a movie, The Devil's Rain (1975), which was shot in New Mexico. The day he returned to Hollywood from New Mexico, he was called to an audition for a new situation comedy series ABC was planning to produce called Welcome Back, Kotter (1975). He got the part of Vinnie Barbarino and the series went on the air during the 1975 fall season.
Travolta had a hit single titled "Let Her In", peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in July 1976. In the next few years, he starred in The Boy in the Plastic Bubble and two of his most noted screen roles: Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Danny Zuko in Grease (1978). The films were among the most commercially successful pictures of the decade and catapulted Travolta to international stardom. Travolta also performed several of the songs on the Grease soundtrack album.
After Urban Cowboy, Travolta starred in a series of commercial and critical failures that sidelined his acting career. These included a romantic comedy Two of a Kind (1983) and Perfect (1985). He also starred in Staying Alive, the 1983 sequel to Saturday Night Fever, which was a financial success, grossing over $65 million, though it too was scorned by critics.
During that time Travolta was offered, but declined, lead roles in what would become box-office hits, including American Gigolo and An Officer and a Gentleman, both of which went to Richard Gere.
In 1989, Travolta starred with Kirstie Alley in Look Who's Talking, which grossed $297 million making it his most successful film since Grease. Next came to Look Who's Talking Too (1990) and Look Who's Talking Now (1993) but it was not until he played Vincent Vega in Quentin Tarantino's hit Pulp Fiction (1994), for which he received an Academy Award nomination, that his career revived. Travolta then went on to win a Golden Globe for his performance in the 1995 comedy Get Shorty. His other notable films from the '90s included Broken Arrow (1996), Phenomenon (1996) and Mike Nichols’s Primary Colors (1998), in which Travolta played a politician based on President Bill Clinton. Travolta ended the decade with The General's Daughter (1999) and entered the new millennium with the woeful Battlefield Earth. Based on the sci-fi novel novel by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, the 2000 film was a pet project for Travolta, who’s a Scientologist, and was almost universally drubbed by critics.
Travolta nonetheless persevered and returned with 2001’s Swordfish, an unevenly rendered cyber thriller that co-starred Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman and Don Cheadle. In 2005, he reprised the role of ultra-cool Chili Palmer in the "Get Shorty" sequel "Be Cool." In addition, he starred opposite Scarlett Johansson in the critically acclaimed independent feature film "A Love Song for Bobby Long," which was screened at the Venice Film Festival, and returned to his musical roots with the 2007 film adaptation of the Broadway smash Hairspray. His other projects from the decade included Ladder 49 (2004), the hit bromance comedy Wild Hogs (2007), animated film Bolt (2008), in which Travolta voiced the title character, The Taking of Pelham 123 and Old Dogs (both 2009).
Since 2010, Travolta has starred mostly in action films and thrillers. In 2012, he starred alongside Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch and Demian Bichir in the Oliver Stone directed movie, "Savages."
With Travolta having appeared in the thriller The Forger (2014), it was then announced in early 2015 that he would appear in the FX miniseries American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, and in 2016, he returned to TV in the first season of the show, in which he played lawyer Robert Shapiro.
In 2018, Travolta filmed movies Speed Kills and Trading Paint, where he played a dirt track racing legend opposite Shania Twain, Michael Madsen and Toby Sebastian. He recently also completed filming on Moose and starred in the crime drama Gotti, where he played mob boss John Gotti opposite his wife, Kelly Preston as Victoria Gotti. The film, directed by Kevin Connolly, was released in theaters across the country in 2018.
Travolta was raised by the daughter of Irish immigrants and the son of Italian immigrants. Thus, his childhood was dominated by Catholicism. Though when he was 21 in 1975, at the height of young Travolta’s fame, he converted to Scientology. In fact, many argue that Travolta was one of the first celebrity Scientologists, paving the way for scores of famous followers from Tom Cruise to Jason Lee. Travolta is happy to talk about his faith and credits Scientology to everything from keeping him sane to helping him emotionally deal with the death of his young son. Scientology, at times, has not been kind to Travolta’s career. In 2000, Travolta pushed a film based on a novel by the creator of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, called Battlefield Earth. The film was a box office flop, universally panned by critics, and is often used as a synonym for “bad movie.”
Politics
Travolta tends to stay out of politics, U.S. or otherwise. It is safe to assume that Travolta is a Democrat or at least friends with Democrats. When the Clinton family was being investigated for fraud in 2008–just as Hillary was running for president–Travolta testified on their behalf. And just as almost every celebrity was obligated to comment on Obama’s 2008 victory, Travolta kept it short, saying: "Yeah, it’s history, man." It's also known that Travolta endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the run-up for the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Views
John Travolta is a philanthropist. Along with his wife, actress Kelly Preston, he is very involved in their charity, The Jett Travolta Foundation, which raises money for a wide variety of charitable and educational causes. John is also the Qantas Airways Global Goodwill “Ambassador-at-Large” and piloted the original Qantas 707 during “Spirit of Friendship” global tour in July/August 2002. John also flew the 707 to New Orleans after the 2005 hurricane disaster bringing food and medical supplies, and in 2010, again flew the 707, this time to Haiti after the earthquake, carrying supplies, doctors and volunteers.
Quotations:
"The first thing I ever rode when I was a kid was a motorcycle, so I knew how to drive a motorcycle before a car."
"Dancing's part of my soul. I enjoy it, it makes people happy, and it makes me happy."
"So you know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna do something really outrageous, I'm gonna tell the truth."
"Sports, entertainment and aviation are three of the most exciting professions in the world; you are dealing with the same magnitude."
"Most people forget that you have to create relationships. The allure of the first years settles down, and at that moment, you better start creating it; otherwise, you're going to lose out."
"I'm from a working-class family. We didn't have a lot, but we had the arts. You're talking to a guy who is making a living at doing what he loves doing - acting, singing and dancing. So any career ups and downs were not that significant to me; the only things that really powerfully impinged on me were my losses, and there were many in my life."
"It's hard to make a cultural phenomenon every time."
"I don't believe in regrets; I believe your future is in your tomorrows."
"You feel alive to the degree that you feel you can help others."
"I will direct one day, but I have a feeling that it will be very limited."
"There are unwanted emotions and pain that goes along with any birth."
"I have to believe there's some other life force out there. I don't know in what form. But we can't have all these galaxies and universes without something going on."
"What we've seen in the shelters is wonderful, because people are being taken care of. What we've seen in the city is disastrous."
Personality
John Travolta is a private pilot. He currently holds the jet licenses and type ratings for the Boeing 747 (Australian cert) and Boeing 707. He also holds licenses in Gulfstream, Challenger, Hawker, Falcon, Lear, Citation jets as well as the de Havilland Vampire and Canadair CL-41 Tutor/Tebaun military jets.
Several men have accused Travolta of sexual assault. In May 2012, an anonymous masseur filed a lawsuit against Travolta citing claims of sexual assault and battery. A second masseur later joined the lawsuit making similar claims. Both lawsuits were subsequently dropped by the complainants and dismissed without prejudice.
In September 2014, Travolta denied claims made in January 2014 by his former pilot, Douglas Gotterba, that the two had shared a sexual relationship during the six-year period in which Gotterba worked for Travolta's aircraft company, Alto.
In 2017, Travolta was named in a criminal complaint by a masseur who accused the actor of sexual battery that reportedly took place in 2000. The masseur was aged 21 at the time.
Physical Characteristics:
Travolta's height is 6' 2" (1.88 m). He has a cleft chin, razor-sharp cheekbones, black hair and blue eyes. He speaks with a New Jersey accent. It is also known that John suffers from insomnia, which he has had since he was a child.
Quotes from others about the person
Hugh Jackman: "I once sang 'Summer Nights,' from 'Grease,' at a bar in Melbourne with John Travolta, who's a good friend of mine. He looked cool singing the part of Danny - sitting in an armchair, smoking a cigar - while I got stuck playing Sandy."
Bruce Dickinson: "I never intended to become a professional pilot. But, as I became more curious about aircraft, and, well, not being John Travolta, I realized that the only way I was ever going to fly a jet is if I got a job."
Joe Johnston: "I think we've always been fascinated with the idea of the romantic outlaw. John Gotti could be in one instance a charismatic, kind and loving family man, and in another, deadly to his enemies. The opportunity to tell the true story of Gotti with John Travolta is a director's dream."
Conan O'Brien: "John Travolta said he sometimes lets his friends take control of his airplane even though they don't know what they're doing. Then Travolta said he often does the same thing with his career."
Quentin Tarantino: "I've always thought John Travolta is one of the greatest movie stars Hollywood has ever produced."
Christina Milian: "When I think of the definition of cool and when I look at people, John Travolta is really the definition of cool because, not only is he great in all his movies, but, as a person, he's just really cool."
Elijah Kelley: "John Travolta, I don't think anybody would not jump at a chance to work with a guy like him because he's gone from 'Grease' to 'Face Off' to, he's gonna do 'Dallas.' I mean, he's so great in his range, and he's truly a legend and a pro in our time."

Connections
Travolta first was in a relationship with actress Diana Hyland, whom he met while filming The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. After separating, he married actress Kelly Preston in 1991. The couple had two children: son Jett, born on April 13, 1992, and daughter Ella Bleu, born in 2000. Travolta and Preston have regularly attended marriage counselling; Travolta has stated that therapy has helped the marriage.
Tragedy struck the Travolta family when their son, Jett, died on January 2, 2009, during a family vacation in the Bahamas. A coroner's report determined the cause of death to be a seizure. In May 2010, nearly 16 months after their son's death, the couple announced that they were expecting another child. Son Benjamin was born in November of that year.
