Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, best known as Tom Cruise, is an American actor and producer. He is the star of several box-office hits, including "Risky Business", "A Few Good Men", "The Firm", "Jerry Maguire" and the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. Tom was honored with three Golden Globe Awards and three nominations for Academy Awards.
It's also worth noting, that Cruise is one of the highest-grossing box office stars of all time.
Background
Tom Cruise was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in Syracuse, New Jersey on the 3rd of July, 1962, to nomadic parents. His mother, Mary Lee Pfeiffer from Louisiana, had married Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electronics engineer from the University of Kentucky. Tom’s parents married in Louisville, Kentucky in 1957 after meeting at the University of Kentucky. Daughter Lee Anne was born in Louisville, then Marian, Tom and Cass (a third daughter) were born in Syracuse.
Mary and Thomas divorced in 1975, and Mary Lee moved the family from Ottawa, Canada, back to their home town of Louisville. She remarried Jack South in 1978, and together, the new family moved to Washington Street in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Tom’s father passed away from cancer in Louisville on January 9, 1984, at the age of 49, never having seen any of Tom’s movies.
Education
Cruise had actually first thought of acting around the age of five. Mary Lee, his mother, was a teacher with a keen interest in amateur theatrics (his cousin William Mapother was an actor) and Tom would be taken regularly to the cinema. He loved it, but the constant movement made settling into anything next to impossible. Later he would say "Nothing was quick enough in terms of life for me".
Tom, a dreamy, lonely child living much of the time in his own interior world, was always the New Kid, forced to prove himself endlessly, and this was made yet more problematic by both shyness and dyslexia. It's thought the latter was brought on by teachers demanding he write with his right hand but, whatever the cause, Tom found learning demanded a terrific effort as pages turned to meaningless blocks of weird scribbles before his eyes. Constantly challenged by his parents, making him exceptionally competitive, he was desperate to fit in - more, to win. So he threw himself into sports - wrestling, raquetball, ice hockey, everything. He wasn't particularly gifted but his intensity and hyper-energy made him difficult to resist.
Cruise’s parents divorced when Tom was 11. Mary Lee took the kids to live at Taylorsville Road, Kentucky, where life was one hell of a struggle, Tom living with an aunt for a year while his mum got house and home together. When he rejoined the family, young Tom was titular Man Of The House, but they all had to work, Tom putting his newspaper delivery earnings into the general coffers. The family received food stamps but not full Welfare as Mary Lee was always working. At one point there was so little money that Tom took a scholarship at the St Francis Seminary in Cincinnati where, for a year (1976), he studied for the priesthood and, more importantly, ate properly.
After Tom left St. Francis, he returned to Louisville where he spent his Sophomore year of High School at St. Xaviar High School. Eventually, Mary Lee married again; to plastics salesman Jack South. There were more moves - indeed, by the age of 14, Tom had attended 15 different schools, being bullied at nearly all of them - but, eventually, they settled, Tom enrolling at Glen Ridge High School, New Jersey for his Junior and Senior years.
What drew Tom to acting was an accident. Suffering a knee injury while wrestling, it was suggested that he try his hand at school theatre productions. Being Cruise, he threw himself in at the deep end, with the musical Guys And Dolls (he'd soon also perform in Godspell), and immediately began to pursue excellence in the field. Typically, he gave himself a 10-year deadline to achieve success.
At 18, he left Glen Ridge and moved to New York, supporting himself by working as a bus-boy, a porter in an apartment block and a table-cleaner at Mortimer's restaurant. In the evenings he took drama classes, auditioning for TV ads whenever possible - he attended the Neighbourhood Playhouse School of Theatre in New York City, studying drama with renowned acting coaches Phil Gushee and Sanford Meisner. He also studied at the Actors Studio, New School University, New York.
Tom looked good, he had that winning smile, but he was never hired. Casting directors always described him as 'too intense'. Other descriptions from those who knew him at the time included "long-haired", "angry", "muscular" and "obsessed with success". Feeding on hot dogs and rice, he lived, he now says 'like an animal in the jungle'.
As yet, he had no connections, but he did have some advantages. Moving from state to state, he'd found his need to fit in had caused him to pick up the appropriate accent. He was always playing a role. Then there was his charm.
Cruise started his career at age 19 in 1981. Tom, who took up acting in high school, made his film debut in "Endless Love" (1981). He had supporting roles in such movies, as "Taps" (1981) and "The Outsiders" (1983) before starring as a high-school senior, who turns his parents' home into a brothel in "Risky Business" (1983). The movie was a major success, earning Cruise widespread recognition. His star status was cemented with "Top Gun" (1986), the highest-grossing film of that year, in which he played a navy jet pilot. In 1986, Cruise appeared opposite Paul Newman in "The Color of Money", which was directed by Martin Scorsese, and two years later starred as an autistic man's selfish brother in "Rain Man". For his portrayal of a Vietnam veteran turned activist in "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989), Cruise received his first Academy Award nomination.
Cruise went on to exhibit a broad depth and range of characters in his films during the 1990's, playing such diverse roles, as a navy lawyer in "A Few Good Men" (1992), a vampire in "Interview with the Vampire" (1994) and a secret agent in "Mission: Impossible" (1996), which he also produced. His performance as a sports agent in "Jerry Maguire" (1996) earned Cruise a second Oscar nomination.
It'a also worth noting, that, in 1993, Tom, together with his former talent agent Paula Wagner, established Cruise/Wagner Productions and the company co-produced several of Cruise's films from that time. Besides, the company had an exclusive deal with Paramount Pictures, but in August 2006, Sumner Redstone, chairman of Viacom (parent company of Paramount Pictures) terminated that relationship, citing Cruise's comments in the media about psychiatry, anti-depressants and Brooke Shields' handling of postpartum depression, as well as his taking up Scientology. However, according to some sources of information, the termination might have been more about money, than anything else. Cruise/Wagner Productions ceased to exist in August 2008.
In 1999, Tom starred with his then-wife, Nicole Kidman, in the highly anticipated final film of director Stanley Kubrick, "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999), an examination of marital fidelity, that drew mixed reviews. That year, Cruise also earned acclaim as a misogynistic self-help guru in "Magnolia", for which he received an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor.
Cruise starred in a number of action films in the 2000's, including the science-fiction thriller "Minority Report" (2002), directed by Steven Spielberg; "The Last Samurai" (2003), in which he played a disaffected United States soldier, who aligns himself with a samurai community; and the gritty Los Angeles-set "Collateral" (2004), in which he took on the role of an obdurate contract killer. He reteamed with Spielberg on "War of the Worlds" (2005), a visually impressive adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel of the same name. In 2008, Cruise earned laughs as an abrasive movie executive in the comedy "Tropic Thunder", and he portrayed the historical figure Col. Claus von Stauffenberg, a German army officer, who organized an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler, in "Valkyrie". He subsequently starred in the action thrillers "Knight and Day" (2010) and "Jack Reacher" (2012), and he lit up screens as a 1980's rock idol in the musical "Rock of Ages" (2012) and as an apocalypse survivor in the sci-fi adventure "Oblivion" (2013). He then played a glib military public relations officer, who is repeatedly killed and resurrected in the comic alien-invasion romp "Edge of Tomorrow" (2014). In some of his later films, including the "Mission: Impossible" sequels (2000, 2006, 2011), Cruise served as a producer, as well as an actor.
In 2017, Cruise starred in the action-horror film "The Mummy", which performed respectably at the box office, but was savaged by critics, and the antic drama "American Made", which earned better reviews. The year of 2018 brought a return to familiar territory for Cruise, who starred in "Mission Impossible-Fallout" that summer. Prior to its release, he tweeted a photo to mark day 1 of production on the long-awaited sequel "Top Gun: Maverick", scheduled for a June 2020 release.
Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood's most famous actors. He is known for starring in a large number of popular films, such as "Top Gun" (1986), "A Few Good Men" (1992), "Jerry Maguire" (1996), "Vanilla Sky" (2001), "War of the Worlds" (2005), and, of course, the "Mission Impossible" movie series. With a net worth of $570 million as of 2020, Tom is one of the highest-paid actors in the world. Besides, his films have grossed over $4 billion in North America and over $10.1 billion worldwide, making him one of the highest-grossing box office stars of all time.
During his career, Tom received many awards, including the Golden Globe Award, the American Cinematheque Award, the BAFTA/LA Britannia Award, the Bambi Award, the David di Donatello Award, the Satellite Award and numerous others.
Besides, Cruise was honored with a number of nominations for such prestigious awards, as the Academy Award (three times), the Fangoria Chainsaw Award, the Golden Schmoes Award, the National Society of Film Critics Award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, among others.
Tom was named the #1 top money-making star at the box office in Quigley Publications annual poll of movie exhibitors a record seven times between 1986 and 2005. In 1990, he was chosen "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine. Five years later, in 1995, Cruise was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history (#41).
In October 1997, Tom ranked #3 in Empire (United Kingdom) magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" list. The same year, he was also chosen by "People" magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world.
In 2002, Cruise ranked #16 in Premiere's 2003 annual Power 100 List. The following year, in 2003, he ranked #14 in the same list. In 2005, the same magazine ranked him as the #3 Greatest Movie Star of All Time in their "Stars in Our Constellation" feature. In 2006, the actor was ranked # 1 in "Forbes Celebrity 100: Who Made Bank?".
It's also worth noting, that Tom Cruise is the first actor in history to star in five consecutive films, that grossed $100 million in the United States. Moreover, he was voted the 31st Greatest Movie Star of all time by Entertainment Weekly.

Religion
Cruise is one of Scientology’s most outspoken supporters, becoming involved with the Church in 1990 through his first wife, Mimi Rogers. Many countries including Germany, France, Canada and the UK, among others, don’t recognize Scientology as a religion, and Cruise has traveled to these countries to speak on behalf of his religion, but with no success.
Politics
Tom Cruise has made tens of thousands of dollars in contributions to the Democratic Party but has also appeared in Republican candidate’s campaign commercials. However, the Republican candidate he lent his star power to was a supporter of Scientology.
It is possible that he looks beyond the party of a politician for issues relating to him, saying once about his political views:
"I’m interested in terms of looking at how it’s going to affect my kids. And it’s more from a humanitarian aspect, not political. You know, the future of the country, and where we are today."

Quotations:
"The thing about filmmaking is I give it everything, that's why I work so hard. I always tell young actors to take charge. It's not that hard. Sign your own checks, be responsible."
"Awards are wonderful. I've been nominated many times and I've won many awards. But my journey is not towards that. If it happens it will be a blast. If it doesn't, it's still been a blast."
"I believe in life. I know that life comes in at your heart and it doesn't matter if you're an actor, a filmmaker or a gentleman on the street, it comes at you. What Scientology gives me is the tools to deal with that, to better enjoy my life and to be able to contribute more."
"As a young actor, people were trying to define who I was before I really knew that for myself. But I still remember thinking, "This is what I love doing, and I hope I'm going to be able to do it forever."
"I've had a very interesting life. There are ways of handling the complexities. I'm willing to take on responsibilities as a father, as a producer, as an actor - and I enjoy that. I've always been changing and evolving and growing. There's no pinnacle of power where you can sit back and rest."
"Because I grew up in so many different places, I was used to rumors [about me]. You know, I didn't have the right shoes, I didn't have the right clothes. I even had the wrong accent."
"The important thing with a child is that you love them, you protect them and you help them to grow and find out who they are. And as a parent, it's my responsibility to help them to become independent and get all the knowledge and a broad view of the world and life. I know that Nic [Nicole Kidman] absolutely agrees with that. And that's what's important: being there."
"I don't really keep counsel with others. I'm the kind of person who will think about something, and if I know it's right I'm not going to ask anybody. I don't go, "Boy, what do you think about this?" I've made every decision for myself - in my career, in my life."
"I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist, I never agreed with psychiatry. Here's the problem. You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do."
"I'm passionate about learning. I'm passionate about life."
"I'm very careful in choosing things. I'm not one of those people that's in, that's out. Once I make a decision, nothing will stop it. It's not something that takes me months to make a decision either, but I evaluate it very carefully, specifically, at the time, taking into account a lot of things."
"What do I want? I want a world without war. I want a world without insanity. I want to see people do well. And I don't even think that it's as much of what I want for myself. It's more what I want for the people around me."

Personality
In 1994, Tom got his pilot licence north of Toronto in Markham, Ontario, Canada. Besides, he is fond of auto racing.
There's a very interesting fact, that Cruise has visited Japan so many times, that the country awarded him with his own "Tom Cruise Day", celebrated in Japan on October 10th.
Disney used Cruise's face as a model for the character Aladdin.
Physical Characteristics:
Tom Cruise's height is about 5 ft 7 inches (170 cm), while his weight is about 68 kg (150 lbs).
Quotes from others about the person
Jon Bon Jovi: "I always think I'm the Tom Cruise of music - a lot of success and fans, but no critics, darling."
Steven Spielberg: "Tom spreads a kind of team spirit to everyone involved. I mean, this guy could win NBA championships if he coached any basketball team. He's a total inspiration, let alone being a great actor."
Dougray Scott talking: "You've got to take your hat off to him and say: "The guy's a madman, but let's admire him." He gets a thrill out of that stuff. He's an adrenaline junkie."
John Woo: "When he talks, he has so much energy it's almost like he's dancing. So I used that to choreograph his action scenes."
Maggie Q: "He's really a great guy, and he's a generous person to work with, and you couldn't ask for a better co-star. He treats everyone as his equal, and I appreciate that a lot, because we're lucky to be here."
Adam Shankman: "Here's the thing about Tom Cruise: I knew in my heart he would never put himself in harm's way about taking on a part if he didn't think he could deliver. So it wasn't until our first go around with his voice lesson, that we sort of looked at each other and went, "This is gonna work!" And we were basically dancing around the living room and high-fiving each other because he actually has a fantastic voice. His grandfather or his great-grandfather was an opera singer, so apparently he's genetically predisposed for this sort of thing. He's having the time of his life and he is so grateful in a strange way, that I even thought of him for this, because this is so outside of what he does. He is going to create an incredibly indelible character, because I told him this needs to be so far out there that it's startling."
Adam Shankman: "The truth of the matter is, he knows he's part of an ensemble. But he's the driving force - it's almost like he's more into it than me. When he commits to something, it's a commitment level I've never seen: He's singing five hours a day; he's gonna start doing rock-star boot camp. It's crazy. And that's following "Mission: Impossible".

Connections
In the early to mid-1980's, Tom had several relationships with older women, among which were Rebecca De Mornay, Patti Scialfa and Cher. On May 9, 1987, Cruise and Mimi Rogers tied the knot. However, their marriage was short-lived and the couple divorced on February 4, 1990. It's important to say, that it was Rogers, who introduced Cruise to Scientology.
While working on the sets of "Days of Thunder", Cruise fell in serious relationship with co-actress Nicole Kidman. The two married on December 24, 1990 in Telluride, Colorado. The couple also adopted two children - Isabella Jane (born 1992) and Connor Antony (born 1995). Despite their rock-solid image, the couple announced in early 2001, that they were separating due to career conflicts. Other sources of information reported, that it was Tom, who, in February 2001, filed for divorce from Kidman, while she was unknowingly pregnant. The pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. In 2007, Kidman clarified rumors of a miscarriage early in her marriage to Cruise, saying, that it was wrongly reported and explaining, that she had actually had an ectopic pregnancy.
Following Tom and Nicole's divorce in 2001, Isabella, the couple's adopted daughter, decided to stay with her 52-year-old dad, and just like him, she also became interested in Scientology.
After divorce from Nicole, Cruise began a romantic relationship with Penélope Cruz. The couple separated in 2004.
In April 2005, Cruise began dating actress Katie Holmes. A month later, Cruise publicly declared his love for Holmes on "The Oprah Winfrey Show", famously jumping up and down on Winfrey's couch during the show. In April 2006, the couple gave birth to their daughter, named Suri. On November 18 the same year, Holmes and Cruise were married at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, in a Scientologist ceremony, attended by many Hollywood stars. On June 29, 2012, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise. The couple was officially divorced in August of the same year.
In 2015, some sources of information claimed, that Tom was going to tie the knot again - this time his partner being Emily Thomas, his personal assistant, who is 31 years his younger. The two met in 2014, when Thomas became Cruise's assistant during the filming of "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation".

Rogers subsequently focused on television work, joining the casts of short-lived sitcoms the Geena Davis Show and, a few years later, The Loop. Since then, Rogers has continued to work steadily in indie features while keeping one foot in the TV world, appearing on the TBS hit My Boys and voicing characters on the animated comedies King of the Hill and Neighbors from Hell.
