He studied at the University of Toronto and the University of Cambridge before embarking on an academic career in Swansea.
He is an Honorary Research Fellow in the College of Arts and Humanities at Swansea University. Between 1977 and 1984, he was a regular presenter of the BBC radio programme Now, and from 1979 to 1980 he edited Wales. In 2012, an exhibition of his " or Type" project was on view at the Hay-on-Wye Jamboree.
He is the father of the actor Tom Ward.
