After migrating to this country he established an office in New York, and in 1855 was awarded his first commission, to design a church in Newark, N. J. In the following years he established a reputation as a specialist in that field, preparing plans for many churches in New York and neighboring cities, of which Dr. Talmadge's "Tabernacle" in Brooklyn, built in 1872, was the most important.
Mr. Welch was one of the charter members of the Brooklyn Chapter, A.I.A. and a Fellow of the Institute, but allowed his membership to lapse in later years .
