He studied architecture at Cornell University, graduating with the class of 1894.
After studied Mr. Westervelt continued an enthusiastic supporter of his Alma Mater, and between 1912 and 1923 served on the Board of Trustees.
Early in the century he moved to New York to start professional practice, and carried on work without associates until shortly before his death. Among other works he designed many of the Childs' restaurants built in Manhattan, including the Restaurant in the Savoy Plaza Hotel, a notable example of Spanish Renaissance design. Mr. Westervelt maintained an office at #36 West 34th Street.
Elected to the New York Chapter, A.I.A in 1921, and a member of the New York Architectural League for many years.
