John Wilson was born on January 20, 1919, in Nottingham, United Kingdom. He is a son of the Reverend George Henry Wilson.
John Wilson attended Graham School. He went blind after a laboratory accident and after that, he went on to be educated at New College Worcester. He also studied law at St Catharine's College.
John Wilson started his career as an assistant secretary at the Royal National Institute Of Blind People in 1941. He spent the next eight years traveling and initiating government programs for the blind in British Commonwealth nations the world over. In 1950 he founded an independent organization which later became known as Sight Savers.
John Wilson established the first International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. He served as the president of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness from 1974 to 1982. Wilson published his first book Ghana's Handicapped Citizens in 1961. Later he wrote such books as Travelling Blind and World Blindness and Its Prevention.
John Wilson was an English public health advocate and writer who was known for his work to prevent blindness in Africa and Southeast Asia. He was also famous for his books Travelling Blind and Ghana's Handicapped Citizens.
John Wilson received the Helen Keller International Award in 1970 and the World Humanity Award in 1978. In 1991, he received the Royal Society of Medicine's Richard T. Hewitt Award. In 1993, he won the Albert Schweitzer International Prize. Wilson received the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1955. In 1965 he received the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. John Wilson was knighted in 1975. A school was established in his honour in Bangladesh, named "Sir John Wilson School".
John Wilson married Chloe Jean McDermid in 1944. The marriage produced two daughters.
