Background

Mead, John Abner was born on April 20, 1841 in Fairhaven, Vermont, United States. Son of Roswell Rowley and Lydia Ann (Gorham) Mead.

Education

Private 12th Vermont Vols., 1862-1863. Bachelor of Arts, Middlebury (Vermont) College, 1864. Doctor of Medicine College Physicians and Surgical (Columbia), 1868.

Career

Practiced medicine, Rutland, Vermont, until 1888. Surgeon-general of Vermont, 1878-1879. Was treasurer Rutland Railroad Company, 1880-1886.

President Vermont State Trust Company, 1881-1886. Treasurer Addison R.R., 1880-1886, etc. President Howe Scale Company, since 1888, Baxter National Bank, since 1904.

Secured 1st charter for City of Rutland, Vermont, and elected 1st mayor, 1893. Vermont commissioner Chicago Exposition, 1893, Mexican National Exposition, 1895.

Member Vermont Senate, 1892, House of Representatives, 1906.
