John Augustus Darling, American soldier.

Background

Darling, John Augustus was born on June 7, 1835 in Bucksport, Maine, United States. Son of Amos Buck and Caroline (Hooper) Darling.

Education

Graduate Pennsylvania Military Academy, 1849.

Career

2d, Clara L. Hastings, October 22, 1895. Commissioned Second lieutenant United States Artillery, August 5, 1861. First lieutenant, May 31, 1862.

Honorary mustered out, January 1, 1871. Appointed captain artillery, April 24, 1878, with former rank and date of commission from December 9, 1867. Assigned to 1st Artillery, March 20, 1879.

Major 5th Artillery, July 1, 1892. Transferred to 3d Artillery, October 7, 1896. Retired at his own request, being 62 years of age, June 7, 1897.

Advanced to rank of lieutenant colonel retired, by act of April 23, 1904. Bvtd. captain and major, March 13, 1865, “for gallant and meritorious services during the war.” Has published many well-known vocal and instrumental compositions in the United States and Europe, under pen-name August Mignon.
