Background
Crosby, John Campbell was born on May 18, 1912 in Milwaukee. Son of Fred G. and Edna (Campbell) Crosby.
(Why is the sky blue and why are sunsets red? When can I s...)
Why is the sky blue and why are sunsets red? When can I see a rainbow? Why is the moon sometimes visible in daylight? In Out of the Blue skywatcher John Naylor offers practical advice about where and when you can expect to see natural phenomena, what you will see and how to improve your chances of seeing it. Naylor takes in both the night and the day sky, and deals only with what can be seen with the naked eye. Drawing on science, history, literature and mythology, and assuming only basic scientific knowledge, Out of the Blue is for everyone who enjoys being outdoors and who feel curious or puzzled about things optical and astronomical. John Naylor was born in England, but spent his childhood in Peru. A graduate of London University with a degree in philosophy, he teaches physics at a secondary school in London.

(Buddhist-Christian reflection that uses friendship as a m...)
Buddhist-Christian reflection that uses friendship as a model for interreligious understanding. In this work of Buddhist-Christian reflection, John Ross Carter explores two basic aspects of human religiousness: faith and the activity of understanding. Carter’s perspective is unique, putting people and their experiences at the center of inquiry into religiousness. His model and method grows out of friendship, challenging the so-called objective approach to the study of religion that privileges patterns, concepts, and abstraction. Carter considers the traditions he knows best, the Protestant Christianity he was born into and the Theravāda and Jōdo Shinshū (Pure Land) traditions of the Sri Lankan and Japanese friends among whom he has lived, studied, and worked. His rich, wide-ranging accounts of religious experience include discussions of transcendence, reason, saṃvega, shinjin, the inconceivable, and whether lives oriented toward faith will survive in a global context with increased pressures for individualism and secularism. Ultimately, Carter proposes that the endeavor of interreligious understanding is itself a religious quest. “This book is valuable for collections that emphasize theology, philosophy, or interfaith movements.” — CHOICE “In the Company of Friends is groundbreaking. It brilliantly critiques current assumptions operative in the academic study of religions, theologies of religions, and interreligious dialogue and painstakingly sketches a new direction for learning inter-religiously. It will become a lightning rod of intense scholarly discussion and creative re-imagining in many fields related to religion and theology in the academy in coming years.” — John J. Makransky, author of Buddhahood Embodied: Sources of Controversy in India and Tibet “This book is a distinctive contribution in the field of Interreligious Dialogue Studies, specifically Buddhist-Christian dialogue, coming from more than three decades of scholarship and experience of the author. The fact that it is a testimony of an accomplished scholar and revered teacher, engaged in interreligious dialogue, giving not only detached accounts of ideas, but more relevantly, his personal engagement with the themes and issues discussed, makes the book an attractive read for those interested in the field.” — Ruben L. F. Habito, author of Healing Breath: Zen for Christians and Buddhists in a Wounded World

(Armies of Castile and Aragon depicts the fighting men who...)
Armies of Castile and Aragon depicts the fighting men whose skill and tactical flexibility made Spain into a world power at the close of the Middle Ages, carving out empires from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean. Much has been written of the men who fought in the Hundred Years' War between England and France, and the Wars of the Roses. But meanwhile, on the Iberian peninsula, the foundations of Spain's military 'Golden Age' were being laid as the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon under the Trastamara dynasty grew in power, ambition and success. This book features spectacular full-color artwork, and rare manuscript illustrations.

In an interplay of metaphor and time, artist John Dugdale invokes a world of light-filled chambers and sensuous bodies. From the muted blue luster of the archaic cyanotype process, his imagery emerges in a mist of loss and remembrance. In the manner of Julia Margaret Cameron's Victorian albums, Dugdale has created an extremely personal and vibrant body of work. Revealed in this first monograph of Dugdale's work is an artistic vision that weds contemporary consciousness with more ageless concerns.

Around AD 1450 a new Mexican nation emerged called the Aztec Empire of the Triple Alliance. They succeeded in making themselves the most powerful and feared civilisation in the Americas. The Mixtec and Zapotec peoples were contemporaries of the Aztec nations, and both formed alliances and fought many wars against them. With Angus McBride's usual quality artwork on eight full page colour plates, plus plenty of other illustrations from various sources, this work by John Pohl investigates the history, uniforms and weaponry of Aztec, Mixtec and Zapotec armies.

Not illustrated. 1866 Excerpt: ...and the Emperours dealings, are things more fickle then are by euerybody understood. "Next, the Dutchmen are there so crept in as they daily augment their trade thither, which may well confirme that uncertainty of the Emperor's disposition to keepe promise with our nation. "Thirdly, the qualitie of the voyage, such as may not be performed but once the yeere. "Fourthly, the charges of all Ambassadours betweene that Prince and her Maiesty, are alwayes borne by the merchants stocke. "And lastly, the danger of the King of-Denmarke, who besides that presently he is like to enforce a tribute on us the Muscovy Company, hath likewise an aduantage upon the ships in their voyage, either homewards or outwards whensoever he listeth to take the opportunitie." In strong contrast to these difficulties and dangers, Carlile brought forward the following arguments in favor of Sir Humphrey Gilbert's contemplated voyage to New Foundland. "1. As first it is to be understood, that it is not any long course, for it may be perfourmed too and fro in foure moneths after the discouerie thereof. "2. Secondly, that one wind sufficeth to make the passage, whereas most of your other voyages of like length, are subiect to 3. or 4. winds. "3. Thirdly, that it is to be perfourmed at all times of the yeere. "4. Fourthly, that the passage is upon the high sea, wherby you are not bound to the knowledge of dangers, on any other coast, more then of that Countrey, and of ours here at home. "5. Fiftly, that those parts of England and Ireland, which lie aptest for the proceeding outward or homeward upon this voyage, are very well stored of goodly harbours. "6. Sixtly, that it is to bee accounted of no danger at all as touching the power of any ...

(Excerpt from Historical Inquiry: Concerning Henry Hudson,...)
Excerpt from Historical Inquiry: Concerning Henry Hudson, His Friends, Relatives and Early Life, Connection With the Muscovy Company and Discovery of Delaware Bay As I stand here to-night, upon the soil of Delaware, scared to me as the cradle and the grave of many of my family, my heart is filled with grateful emotions awakened by the thought, that a Historical Society, composed of the most distinguished citizens, has at last been inaugurated within these borders, and is about to engage in the agreeable duty of gathering up and preserving for all time, the invaluable but hitherto sadly neglected records of the State and Province. Prom the precious materials thus collected, I hope to see arise, at no distant day, a clear, luminous and connected narrative, embodying the story of our ancestors' heroic lives. (The odds of being hit by lightning each year are only abo...)
The odds of being hit by lightning each year are only about 1 in 750,000 in the U.S. And yet this rare phenomenon has inspired both fear and fascination for thousands of years. Herman Melville called it “God’s burning finger.” The ancient Romans feared it as the wrath of God. Today we have a more scientific understanding, so why our eternal fascination with lightning? Out of the Blue attempts to understand this towering force of nature, exploring the changing perceptions of lightning from the earliest civilizations through Benjamin Franklin’s revolutionary experiments to the hair-raising adventures of storm chasers like David Hoadley, who’s been chronicling extreme weather for half a century. Combining captivating fact with thrilling personal stories, Out of the Blue tells a remarkable true tale of fate and coincidence, science and superstition. It is a book for sports enthusiasts, outdoor adventurers, science and weather buffs, nature lovers, and anyone who has ever been awed or frightened by the sight of lightning.
