Mr. Hu, the eldest of seven children, was born in the city of Nanzhang, a city where fourteen generations of his family lived for almost 400 years. He and his wife, Betty, a chemist, also have seven children, six sons and one daughter. Four of his sons received their degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology while his three other children received their degrees from Stanford University.
