Ordained as evangelist, 1827. Published semi-annual The Sabbath School Guide. Missionary in Elyria, O., 1830-1832.
Collaborated with Philo P. Stewart to found Oberlin College, 1832. Traveled through New York and New England securing money, teachers, settlers, 1832-1833, 1st settlement made in Ohio, 1833. Presided at departments of the Oberlin Collegiate Institute, 1833.
Oberlin became center of reform and revival piety. Secured firm establishment by bringing dissatisfied students as well as financial backing from Lane Seminary, 1835. Led small group of people who established colony and school, Olivet, Michigan, 1844.
Married Esther Raymond, 1824, 7 children.
