John Joseph Conlon was born on March 23, 1945, in Lowell, Massachusetts, United States. He is a son of John Joseph Conlon and Helen Theresa (Matthews) Conlon.
In 1968, John graduated magna cum laude from Catholic University of America with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He continued his education at Tufts University in Medford, graduating with a Master of Arts degree in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1974.
In 1968, John was appointed a teacher of English and drama at Malden Catholic High School, a post he held till 1970. The following year, in 1971, he served as a teaching assistant at Tufts University in Medford. The same year, Conlon acted as a Professor of English at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Between 1972 and 1974, John held a post of a high school English teacher, working at different Public Schools in Fall River, Massachusetts. In 1974, he was appointed a director of Teacher Certification Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston and remained in that position until 1980, when he was made an assistant dean of arts and science at the same university. Three years later, in 1983, Conlon left the post and was promoted to the position of an associate dean of arts and science. In 1990, John left the post of an associate dean. In addition, in 1983, John was appointed an associate Professor of English, also at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
It was in 1990, that Conlon started working as a lecturer of theatre arts. It's worth noting, that, between 1991 and 1997, he was a vocalist of Bridgewater State College Alumni Choir.
During his career, Conlon also acted as a member and adjudicator of the New England Theater Conference. He is also a member of Stage Source, arts service organization. In addition, he worked as an actor and director at local theater groups, including Company Theater, North Quincy Alumni Theater and Washington Street Players. Moreover, Conlon designs sets, sound and lighting, and acts as a production manager and judge of drama competitions.
John penned the book, entitled "Walter Pater and the French Tradition", which was published in 1982. He also contributed to the Dictionary of Literary Biography - Volume 111: American Literary Biographers, Second Series. Conlon is the author of such plays, as "Charlie Marlow’s Yarn", "Mysteries: A Medieval Pageant" and "Peace and Love, Tartuffe".
Also, Conlon is a contributor to encyclopedias, as well as a contributor of articles and reviews to periodicals, including Italian Quarterly, Arnoldian, Dickens Quarterly, English Language Notes and Notes and Queries.
