Naval aide to President Roosevelt, 1942. Detached to sea duty, 1943, to command United States Ship Iowa. Command Cruiser Division in Pacific Fleet, 1944.

Assigned as deputy chief naval operations, 1946. Deputy commander-in-chief United States Pacific Fleet, 1948. With office of Secretary Defense, 1949-1952.

Retired from active naval service, 1953. Second vice president John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, 1953, vice president, 1956-1966. Director Franklin Management Corporation, Four Square Fund, Inc., Boston.
