Elected New York Assembly, 1855. Took important part in re-election of William H. Seward to United States Senate. Presidential elector (Lincoln ticket), 1864.

Postmaster, Rochester, 1865-1869. Grand Master New York Grand Lodge, I. O. O. F., 1875, 77, grand sire of the I. O. O. F. of the World, and life member of S. G. L., 1894-1896. Grand representative to Sovereign Grand Lodge.
