Farmer and breeder of fine cattle and horses at Spring Hill Farm, near Versailles, Kentucky, since 1896. Actively identified with opening and development of coal mines in eastern Kentucky. Appointed by Governor James B. McCreary as United States senator from Kentucky, June 16, 1914, to fill vacancy, and elected in November following, for unexpired term ending March 4, 1915.
