Johsel Namkung was born on April 24, 1919, in Gwangju, Kwangju-jikhalsi, Republic of Korea.
Johsel Namkung received his Bachelor of Arts in 1939 from the Tokyo Conservatory of Music, and his Master of Arts in 1951 from the School of Music, University of Washington, Seattle. He considers Paul Strand and Edward Weston his major influences.
Johsel Namkung has been a scientific photographer for the University of Washington since 1961. He was a board member of the Henry Gallery Association at the University of Washington (since 1972), Olympic Park Associates (since 1967), and Northwest School of Arts (since 1979). Johsel Namkung was a founding member of the Photography Council, Seattle Art Museum. The photographer worked in various large formats, printing 20 x 24.
