Harpe began his career as a lecturer at the University of Cape Town in 1973. Eight years later he took a position of a postdoctoral fellow at Rockefeller University and held it for a year. In 1984, Jon was appointed a research associate at that university. Two years later he became an assistant professor at Cornell University Medical School. Also Harpe served as a group leader at Applied Microbiology, Inc. from 1989 to 1993. In 1993, he took a position of a program manager at the same company. Since 1996 Harpe has been a vice president of AMBI Inc.
