(Plagues have inflicted misery and suffering throughout hi...)
Plagues have inflicted misery and suffering throughout history. They can be traced through generations in our genes, with echoes in religion and literature. Featuring essays arising from the 2014 Darwin College Lectures, this book examines the spectrum of tragic consequences of different types of plagues, from infectious diseases to over-population and computer viruses. The essays analyse the impact that plagues have had on humanity and animals, and their threat to the very survival of the world as we know it. On the theme of plagues, each essay takes a unique perspective, ranging from the impact of plagues on history, medicine, the evolution of species, and biblical metaphors, to their impact on national economies, and even our highly connected digital lifestyles. This engaging and timely collection challenges our understanding of plagues, and asks if plagues are the manifestation of nature's checks and balances in light of human population growth and our impact on climate change.

(Immunological Correlates of Protection from Infection and...)
Immunological Correlates of Protection from Infection and Diseases presents data designed to accelerate Vaccine Design and Development. In Immunological Correlates of Protection from HIV Infection and Disease III, new insights into the role of HIV specific immunity in HIV-exposed but apparently uninfected and persistently seronegative persons were presented. Disease resistance and/or susceptibility in man and non-human primates were discussed with particular reference to the frequency and function of CDS + T cells, viral escape from immune responses and genetic factors. Novel prophylactic interventions and vaccine regimens to pre- vent infection or to control primary infection and to ameliorate the harmful long-term effects of the virus, were discussed. The importance of the induction of both cellular and humoral responses was recognised by the speakers. Data from non-human primates is now being translated into phase I vaccine trials in humans.. (The second "Summit" on Immune Correlates of Protection wa...)
The second "Summit" on Immune Correlates of Protection was held in Oxford in April 1998. This was the second international meeting to discuss immune correlates of protection from HIV infection or disease. The aim was to facilitate vaccine development by understanding the protective mechanisms that vaccines needed to induce.

The first "Summit" on Immune Correlates of Protection was held at Le Mont-Pelerin Switzerland in May 1995. This meeting was the first meeting of the minds to discuss the immune mechanisms and standardisation of assays to provide immunological criteria to facilitate vaccine development for notoriously difficult vaccines such as HIV.
