He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in computer graphics from the New York Institute of Technology. Monaghan then went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Maryland.

Monaghan"s animations have been screened at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington District of Columbia and the Sundance Film Festival. His work have been reviewed in the Washington Post and the Village Voice. In its November 2011 issue, District of Columbia Modern Luxury Magazine named Monaghan one of the "Top 10 young artists to collect".
