(As children, Kit and Kiki Smithers performed as the Sugar...)
As children, Kit and Kiki Smithers performed as the Sugar Babes of Sugarland, Texas, singing at county fairs, talent shows, and any shady gig their talent agent mother, Vivica, was able to book. Now those glory days are long gone, and the sisters cope with all the usual challenges and frustrations of young mommies. Kit is comfortably married to Mel, a gentle, salt-of-the-earth mechanic, and has begun to explore her knack for trompe l’oeil and tole painting. Kiki longs to return to the stage, daydreaming of escape from her abusive husband Wayne. She finds the strength to leave Wayne at least once a year, but has yet to stay left. Now she’s pregnant for a third time and determined to start over before the baby is born. As Kiki's life collapses and Kit's life is suddenly shattered, the sisters recall an old story Vivica told them when they were little girls: a story about sisters and monsters, mothers, goddesses, and a series of seemingly impossible tasks whereby a girl, betrayed and broken, finds her way out of the underworld into the light.

Bald in the Land of Big Hair is the hilarious-and often heartbreaking-tale of Joni Rodgers's journey through the badlands of cancer told with humor, occasional anger, and unflinching honesty. More than just a cancer book, this is a deeply affecting memoir of one woman's struggle to come to terms with everything that life throws her way. Ultimately, this is a moving celebration of the true meaning of human triumph and courage, the importance of community and the imperative of living everyday with joy.

(Exploring the timeless themes of family, self, misfortune...)
Exploring the timeless themes of family, self, misfortune, and hope that have made the novels of Anna Quindlen and Sue Miller bestsellers, Joni Rodgers's moving and powerful tale tells the story of three women bound together by loss and set free by love. Pia feels the walls of her life closing in around her, until she discovers a strangely sensual world that leads her to a new existence. Lily, Pia's brash, tough-talking sister, makes a tragic mistake that leaves her incarcerated, body and soul. But when she finds the last thing she expects - love - she is at last able to face the past. Beth, married to Pia and Lily's brother, has never been able to admit her own failure as a mother. Finally forced to confront a tragedy of her own making, she discovers that the truth can set her free.

(As Hurricane Katrina howls toward the ill-prepared city o...)
As Hurricane Katrina howls toward the ill-prepared city of New Orleans, Dr. Corbin Thibodeaux, a Gulf Coast climatologist and storm risk specialist, preaches the gospel of evacuation, weighed down by the fresh public memory of a spectacularly false alarm a year earlier. Meanwhile, Shay Hoovestahl, a puff piece reporter for the local news, stumbles on the story of a con artist who uses storm-related chaos as cover for identity theft and murder. Laying a trap to expose the killer, Shay drags Corbin into her agenda, which goes horribly awry as the city's infrastructure crumbles. The Hurricane Lover is a fast-paced tale of two cities, two families, and two desperate people seeking shelter from the storm.
