José Julián Martí Pérez was born in Havana, Cuba on January 28, 1853, the son of Spanish parents.
From boyhood he wrote and worked in behalf of Cuban independence, and in 1869, when he was sixteen, he was condemned to six years' imprisonment for his rebellious activities. A year later his sentence was commuted to confinement within Spain, however, and there he studied law at the universities of Madrid and Zaragoza.
After going to Mexico in 1874 and returning to Cuba in 1878, he was again deported to Spain in 1879 but fled in 1880 and came to the United States. There he remained until 1895, the year in which the war for Cuban independence, which he had helped to foment from New York, broke out. He went immediately to Cuba but was killed there in the Battle of Dos Ríos.
Since that time Martí has been considered the outstanding Cuban national hero. Martí was a writer of significance as well as a patriot. His most important work in prose was journalistic, and the newspaper articles included in his Obras completas (1946) ("Complete Works") treat of Cuba and its independence, of literature, education, painting, politics, and life.
His Nuestra América (1910) ("Our America") deals with cultural and literary aspects of almost all the republics of America, including the United States. Europe also attracted Martí's attention, and he wrote abundantly on Spain, France, and Italy. Martí's more literary work is represented by his poetry, which, although it has a Romantic tone, is not limited by the conventions of that type of writing. The works of Martí, considered separately, often reflect the disturbed urgency with which they were written, but in their totality they are impressive as the expression of a life of devoted national aspiration.
