José Francisco Rezek is a Brazilian judge who served as a member of the International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, Netherlands, from 1996 to 2006. He was Foreign Minister of Brazil from March 1990 to April 1992 and has been a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration since 1987. Rezek is also the president of several conferences, a lecturer and an examiner for professorship contests in the leading Brazilian universities (since 1971).

During the university was a reporter of "Diário de Minas"(journal), and was a fellow of the Interamerican University Foundation course for extension and research program at Harvard University in the United States (1965), about American institutions and Problems of Economic Development.

Doctor of the University of Paris in Public International Law by thesis defense had as patron Professor Georges Vedel, on October 2, 1970, with honorary mention. Visiting researcher at the University of Paris at the invitation of the French Government (1973), and Researcher at post-doctorate at Oxford University, Britain, compared with public law, under the auspices of the British Council (1978/1979). Holder of Diploma in Law from the Oxford University , obtained by thesis defense (Reciprocity as a Basis of Extradition, 1979).
Career
He settled in Brasilia at the end of 1970, as advisor to the Minister Bilac Pinto on the Supreme Court. In 1972, through competition in which he took second place in the national ranking, Jose began his career as a public prosecutor and was promoted twice (1973/1974), he was Deputy Attorney-General of the Republic from 1979 to 1983. Jose Francisco was elected by the Supreme Court and joined the Supreme Electoral Tribunal from 1987.
On March 15, 1990 he became the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, this position he held until April 13, 1992. In this title was on an official visit and work in missions in Argentina, France, the United States, Portugal, Chile, Italy, Japan, UK, Germany, Cape Verde, China, the Republic of Korea, Iran, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.
On May 4, 1992 Jose Francisco was named for the second time, to the post of Minister of the Supreme Court. Elected by the Supreme he returned to the Superior Electoral Court in 1992. Jose Francisco retired on request by decree of February 5, 1997.
He retired as Justice of the Supreme Court on February 6, 1997, after being elected by the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations as a Justice of the International Court of Justice, based in The Hague on nine years term. Throughout this period taught at the University of Paris (Panthéon-Sorbonne) an extension course (Le Marché du Sud Commun: origines, actualité, perspectives, 1998) and gave lectures in several Brazilian universities and study centers of law, and in class institutions of Justice and the Prosecutor. He also lectured at the Universities of Paris, Berlin, London, Milan, Turin , Rome, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Cairo and Vancouver. Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College, he live mostly in São Paulo, where he head a law firm.
