About the Book Biblical studies are a set of diverse disciplines that are concerned with a study of the Bible, i.e. the Tanach and the New Testament. There were four gospels comprising the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), and these are the main sources of information about the life of Jesus. Bible studies itself draws on many disciplines ranging from archaeology, ancient history, cultural backgrounds, textual criticism, literary criticism, historical backgrounds, philology, and social science. As to philology for example, most of the Hebrew Bible, the Tanakh, which formed the basis of the Christian Old Testament, was written in Biblical Hebrew, with a few chapters rendered in Biblical Aramaic. On the other hand, the New Testament was written in Koine Greek. Joseph Henry Allen was born on August 21, 1820 in Northboro, Massachussets, United States. His father, Joseph Allen, was minister of the First Church in Northboro for fifty-six years; his mother, Lucy Clarke Ware, was a daughter of Reverend Henry Ware whose appointment as Hollis Professor of Divinity in Harvard created consternation among the stricter orthodox brethren of the day.
Allen was prepared for college in the noted school which his father established and for many years maintained in the Northboro parsonage. He graduated from Harvard at the age of twenty, ranking third in his class, and without delay entered upon the course in divinity, graduating in 1843.
Allen was ordained minister of the First Congregational Society of Jamaica Plain in October 1843. In 1847 he took charge of the Unitarian church in Washington, and in 1850 became minister of the church in Bangor, Maine. He seems not to have possessed those features of temperament which make the so-called successful preacher. Meditatively rather than socially inclined, he found it difficult to adjust himself to the peculiar social demands of a parish. He was of too judicial and discerning a temperament to become an aggressive advocate of partisan measures, and he lacked the positive manner of address expected from the pulpit. But at no time did he ever leave his hearers in doubt as to where he stood on questions of importance. While it was contrary to his nature to become a member of anti-slavery organizations, he spoke unreservedly and plainly for abolition at a time when it would have been profitable to have been, at least, non-committal.
His scholarly and critical temper and his preference for the study rather than the parlor probably made it inevitable that he should drift out of the active ministry. In 1857 he took up the calling of teacher in Jamaica Plain, Northboro, and West Newton. During this period (1857-1866) he became active in the field of Unitarian periodical literature in various editorial capacities. He was associate editor of the Christian Examiner, 1863-1865, to which he had begun to contribute as early as 1844.
In 1878 he was appointed, on recommendation of Reverend F. H. Hedge, lecturer on ecclesiastical history in Harvard, a position he held for four years. From 1887 to 1891 he was editor of the Unitarian Review. During these years he did not entirely sever his connection with the ministry, and was ready to respond to frequent calls to supply pastorless pulpits. Though refusing to accept any permanent settlement, he ministered to churches in Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1877-1878, Ithaca, New York, 1882-1883, and San Diego, California, 1884.
He died in Cambridge, Massachussets, on March 20, 1898.
