He is the owner of the North Point Gallery in San Francisco and is also a professor of art history at the University of California in Davis.

He is a member of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Oakland Museum, and also an honorary member of the California Historical Society, which granted him an Award of Merit.
