Joseph Bennett

Background

Bennet was born on 29th November 1831б in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. He learned to play several instruments.

Career

Bennett was a precentor at the Weigh House Chapel, and organist of Westminster Chapel. Then he was a music critic for the ''Sunday Times", ''Pall Mall Gazette" and "Graphic", also contributing to the "Music World" and "Music Standard". At present on the staff of the "Musical Times" and "Daily Telegraph". He edited the ''Concordia" in 1875-1876, and ''The Lute" in 1883-1886.

Achievements

Since 1885 Bennett has annotated the programs of the Philharmonic Society. Bennet also succeeded J. W. Davison as writer of the analytical programs for the Saturday and Monday Popular Concerts. He has furnished several English composers with some of their best libretti.
