After graduation, Joseph DiMona started to work as a radio announcer for the Washington Senators and Washington Redskins. He also worked as a courier at The Washington Post. Soon, Joseph DiMona started writing stories and novels. He was a scriptwriter for business, science and military documentary films. His documentary on geomagnetism won a prize at the Venice Film Festival.
Based in New York for most of his career, DiMona published his first book, a collection of short stories titled Husbands Who Love Their Wives Are the Best, in 1955. He also wrote nonfiction books such as This Was Burlesque, The Great Court-Martial Cases. This Was Burlesque became a 1964 feature film. Joseph DiMona also was the ghostwriter behind H. R. Haldeman, for whom he wrote The Ends of Power. This book spent nine weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. However, DiMona insisted on shared credit and 50-50 profits, and said that he made $500,000 on the Haldeman book.
