Joseph Fontenrose was born on June 17, 1903, in Sutter Creek, California, United States. He was the son of Antone and Alice Laura (Eddy) Fontenrose.
Joseph received a Bachelor of Arts in 1925, a Master of Arts in 1928, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1933.
Joseph Fontenrose began his career as a classics instructor at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, in 1931, moving to the University of Oregon in 1934, finally returning to the University of California, Berkeley, in 1934. He became a full professor there in 1955, teaching Latin and Greek language and literature, retiring in 1970.
His first book, Python: A Study of Delphic Myth and Its Origins, was published in 1959. His last book was Didyma: Apollo's Oracle, Cult, and Companions. Fontenrose also contributed numerous essays to World Book Encyclopedia. Encyclopedia International, and the Oxford Classical Dictionary, as well as many journals and reviews.

1988Fontenrose gave public support in the early 1960s to the Free Speech Movement and Young People's Socialist League.
Fontenrose was a member of American Philological Association, Modern Language Association, American Folklore Society, William Morris Society, John Steinbeck Society, Fabian Society (London, England), University of California Faculty Club, Sierra Club.
Joseph married Marie Holmes on June 22, 1942.
