Joseph Laveille was born at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, United States.
In 1921 he formed a partnership with George Morton with whom he had worked in Pennsylvania, and the firm acquired a successful practice in St. Louis, engaged in planning and supervising work on a number of public buildings. The most important of these were the first Court House in the city built c.1825 which stood on the west side of Fourth Street between Market and Chestnut until it was razed in 1865; the first Episcopal church built west of the Mississippi, a brick edifice at the corner of Third and Chestnut Streets; the first Jefferson Barracks structure, 1828, and later the firm's outstanding achievement, and the present Roman Catholic Cathedral, first important building in the city designed in the Greek Revival style. Completed in 1834 and dedicated as the Church of St. Louis of France, it remains one of the city’s most noted landmarks.
In addition to architectural work, Mr Laveille was active in municipal affairs, serving as Street Commissioner for three years (1823-26).
