McLeod graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Art degree and attended the University of Toronto.
During his career Joseph McLeod worked as a director, administrator, teacher, and farmer. Now he works as an artistic director at Peterborough Summer Theatre and Minkler Theatre of Seneca College. He also holds the position of curator at Maslak McLeod Gallery.
Canadian teacher, artistic director, farmer, and poet Joseph McLeod is the author of several volumes of poems, as well as a prolific contributor to numerous literary periodicals. His works in poetry include Conversations with Maria, Collected Citizen, And the Rivers Our Blood, Cleaning the Bones, Protect My House, Greendream: Collected and New Poems, Shorter Chinese Lyrics, and Rim Poems.
He is also the author of From the Fringe of China, Villiers Publications, England and works represented in anthologies, including Penguin Book of Canadian Verse, Rowboats and Rollerskates, I Am an Indian, and Other Voices.
During his career McLeod was a contributor to periodicals, including Canadian Forum, Cardinal, Bitterroot, Fiddle-head, Four Quarters, Inscape, North, Poet and Critic, Poetry Australia, Poetry Florida, Quixote, and Trace.
