Sayers, Joseph Draper was born on September 23, 1841 in Grenada, Mississippi, United States. Son of David and Mary Thomas (Peete) Sayers.

Education

Removed with father to Bastrop, Texas, 1851. Educated Bastrop Mil Institute in C.S.A., 1861-1865.

Career

Admitted to bar, 1866. Member Texas Senate, 1873. Chairman Democratic State Executive Committee, 1875-1878.

Lieutenant governor of Texas, 1879-1880. Elected 49th to 55th Congresses (1885-1899). Resigned from 55th Congress, January 16, 1899.

Governor of Texas, 2 terms, 1899-1903. Chairman Industrial Accident Board of Texas, 1913-1915. Member Board of Legal Examiners, Texas, 1922-1926.
