In this study, Dr. Privitera shows that Sicilian is not a dialect, nor a corruption of Italian. Dr. Privitera convincingly argues that Sicilian is the oldest of the romance languages.

(Sicily was the jewel of the Mediterranean, and Sicilians ...)
Sicily was the jewel of the Mediterranean, and Sicilians were the first civilized people of the Western World-here is their rich and diverse history in crisp prose and lively illustration. This concise history relates how Sicily rose to become the first independent, civilized nation of greater Italy, as well as home to many of the world's most distinguished philosophers, mathematicians, scientists, and artists. The narrative subsequently recounts the region's millennium-long decline at the hands of foreign invaders, its hard-won battle for freedom in 1860 under the leadership of Giuseppe Garibaldi, and its current status as a center for art and tourism.

The Normans invaded Sicily in 1061, five years before the Battle of Hastings. This book looks for Norman traces in San Fratello, a Sicilian town 50 miles west of Messina, by historical analysis of the town's dialect. After the Normans had been absorbed into San Fratello, residents sounded more French than Sicilian and their dialect became incomprehensible to other Sicilians. The Priviteras also found elements of France, Lombardy and Provencal in the dialect. Thus this study establishes the presence of Normans, Provencals and Gallo-Italians in San Fratello. Language can serve as a historical determinant when documents and oral tradition have failed.
