Admitted to bar, 1859. Settled at Adel, Dallas Company, Iowa, 1857. Practiced law there till July 1, 1861, when became First lieutenant 2d Iowa Battery.
Mustered as captain same battery, October 1, 1864. Mustered out, June 10, 1865. Resumed practice of law at Adel.
Removed to Council Bluffs, 1869. Member Iowa Senate, 1866-1868. Appointed judge District Court, September 1, 1872, elected to same in same year and reëlected, 1876, 1880.
Judge Supreme Court, Iowa, 1883-1889. Member 51st Congress (1889-1891). Appointed chief justice United States Court of Private Land Claims, June 1, 1891, and served until that court terminated by limitation, June 30, 1904.
