Phillips"s medal was won for his capturing the flag during the Battle of Sutherland"s Station on April 2, 1865. The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Josiah Phillips, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 April 1865, while serving with Company East, 148th Pennsylvania Infantry, in action at Sutherland Station, Virginia, for capture of flag.
