Jovan Deretic got a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Faculty of Philology, Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in 1958, 1960 and 1966 respectively.
Jovan Deretic began his carer as an assistant for Serbian literature at Faculty of Philology, Belgrade in 1960. In 1969 he was appointed as a docent for Yugoslav Literature in Belgrade. From 1970 to 1971 Deretic served as a docent for Yugoslav Literature in St. Petersbourg, Russia. In five years he began a career of associate professor in Belgrade, and worked there till 1981. Since 1981 he had been a professor at Faculty of Philology in Belgrade.
Jovan Deretic has been listed as a noteworthy Literature historian by Marquis Who's Who.
