Ronald Berger was born in South Africa.
(The A-Z, short-entry format is similar to Leslie Halliwel...)
The A-Z, short-entry format is similar to Leslie Halliwell's justly famous Halliwell's Film Guide ( the sixth edition of which was released in March), providing release date, running time and other technical details, production and cast credits, a brief plot summary with critical commentary, and awards won. Since this work was originally published in Britain under the title Bloomsbury Foreign Film Guide in 1988, the films are listed under their British release title, an inconvenience for American readers which is ameliorated by comprehensive cross-references from the U.S. title as well as the original foreign-language title and variants. Expected classics from Italy, France, Germany, and the U.S.S.R. are included, but there is also a rich sampling of titles from India, Japan, Poland, etc.

(The definitive biography of a seminal figure in film hist...)
The definitive biography of a seminal figure in film history, whom Orson Welles called "the greatest of all directors." Jean Renoir's career almost spans the history years of cinema - from the early silent movies to the naturalism of the talkies, committed cinema, film noir, Hollywood studio productions, the Technicolor-period comedies, and fast television techniques. His film The Grand Illusion remains one of the greatest movies about the effects of war. Decades after its release, Renoir's The Rules of the Game (1939) is the only film to have been included on every top 10 list in Sight & Sound's respected decennial poll since 1952, cementing Renoir's influence. André Bazin and François Truffaut praised Renoir as the patron saint of the French New Wave. Jean Renoir: Projections of Paradise gives detailed accounts of Renoir's working methods and captivating appraisals of his films, and his long and fascinating life from his blissful childhood as the son of the great Impressionist painter Auguste Renoir. This is a must-listen for students of film and all fans of entertaining, timeless movies.

Shining a new light on Eisenstein’s early life, his work, his homosexuality, and his keen interest in the West, this book is “a comprehensive and thoughtful biography” of an influential director who saw film as the synthesis of all the arts and whose work displayed a passionate and profound grasp of art, science, philosophy, and religion (The New York Times).

(From their startling debut, Blood Simple (1984), all of t...)
From their startling debut, Blood Simple (1984), all of their movies reveal a distinctive stamp: a flamboyant visual style, richly conceived characters, crisp dialogue, and brilliant casting. They have revitalized old Hollywood genres such as noir, screwball, and the western, giving them a contemporary sensibility. In this biography, Ronald Bergan traces the brothers' Jewish roots, their beginnings as film geeks in suburban Minneapolis, their battle to get their first feature made and released, through their early features and the movies of their maturity. He gives blow-by-blow accounts of the making of each movie. New chapters cover all those released since O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), with which the first edition of this book ended.

Ronald Berger was born in South Africa.
Bergan received education in England and later the United States.
Ronald Bergan is a writer and critic. He lectured on film at the Sorbonne, France, and the British Institute beside writing for numerous television documentaries. Currently, he is a jury member of several film festivals and considered as a professional speaker at various universities, film and theater clubs, on radio and television.
After writing Sport in the Movies, Ronald Bergan co-wrote with Robyn Karney Movie Mastermind: Over WOO Questions to Addle the Addict and Baffle a Buff. W. B. Hooper, a reviewer for Booklist, called the trivia book “great fun” and Bergan followed with a solo effort. Rupert Christiansen, a reviewer in the Chicago Tribune, called the year-by-year chronicle “valuable” as a “mirror of the changing times” of the movie industry. Christopher Schemering, a reviewer in Washington Post Book World, claimed that fans would “be pleased by Bergan’s incisive, sometimes irreverent film-by-film commentary.”
Continuing his interest in the fine arts, Bergan turned his attention to the realm of London theaters with The Great Theatres of London: An Illustrated Companion. With a foreword by famed actor Anthony Hopkins, The Great Theatres is a sampling of story and myth. Charles Neuringer, a reviewer in American Reference Book Annual, called the book “a delight.” Ilene Cooper, a reviewer in Booklist, recommended the book for “libraries with large theater or travel collections.”
Collaborating again with Robyn Karney, Bergan tackled the wealth of foreign-language films with The Holt Foreign Film Guide. W. P. Hogan, a reviewer in Choice, called the work “pleasant and informative.” A reviewer in Bloomsbury Review considered the treatment of over 2000 foreign films as “surprisingly up-to-date and truly comprehensive” as well as a “much-needed reference book.” Robert L. Turner, Jr., a reviewer in American Reference Book Annual, commended Bergan and Karney for omitting only those “movies that are virtually impossible to see in their original versions.” Robin Buss, a reviewer in Times Educational Supplement, called the book “an exceptionally useful work of reference.”
Exploring the careers of four Oxbridge, England artists who took British comedy down a new creative path, Bergan wrote Beyond the Fringe... and Beyond. A reviewer in Books called the work a “witty and constructive in commentary.” Byron Rogers, a reviewer in the Spectator, recommended Beyond the Fringe for Bergan’s inclusion of biographical material concerning Jonathan Miller and that the book “is worth buying alone.”
Bergan again shifted his focus and attention and investigated the enigmatic yet troubled life and times of Sergei Eisenstein in Sergei Eisenstein: A Life in Conflict. A reviewer in the Economist declared that “Bergan’s lucid book is a reminder of both how great a director Eisenstein was and how much greater his achievement might have been.” Jane Plymale, a reviewer in Library Journal, claimed Bergan focused “more on the human interactions that influenced Eisenstein than on the ideas themselves.”
