(While Evangelicals strive to follow the pattern of Script...)
While Evangelicals strive to follow the pattern of Scripture in everything, they often conform to American culture in one critical respect: They exclude women from pastoral leadership. Wesleyan-Holiness churches such as the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) insist fitness for ministry be based on an individual's spiritual gifts rather than gender. For this reason, women have served as pastors in the Church of God and other Wesleyan-Holiness denominations such as the Church of the Nazarene and the Free Methodist Church. However, some Wesleyan-Holiness congregations have been swayed by the Evangelical tide and are refusing to consider women for pastoral ministry. Called to Minister, Empowered to Serve documents this drift in the Church of God with unflinching honesty. It highlights several dozen women whose spiritual fruit proves that God anointed them to pastoral work. This case study is instructive for other Wesleyan-Holiness groups. Ministers and ministry students, both male and female, will find here vital biblical insights into their pastoral vocation.
