Julia Scully's memoir of her childhood, "Outside Passage," was published in 1998 by Random House and re-published in 2011 by the University of Alaska Press. The book received wide critical acclaim including a full-page lead review in the Sunday New York Times Book Review.

Julia Scully earned a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California (1951), and a Master of Arts from New York University, New York City (1970).
Since 1966 Julia Scully has been the editor of Modern Photography. She previously edited Camera 35 (1961-1966) and was an associate editor for U.S. Camera (1956-21961). She has taught at the New School for Social Research in New York City and at Ramapo College of New Jersey, Mahwah.
