Emerson was born in Homer in Claiborne Parish in North Louisiana and moved to Carencro with her family at the age of seven.

She graduated from Westminster Christian Academy in Opelousas. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina.
After college, she established Lagniappe Communications Group, a public relations firm. Emerson is one of two children of Don and Susan Volentine Emerson of Carencro. She is active in the First Baptist Church of Lafayette.
She sits on the board of trustees at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
In 2012, she was elected to the Louisiana Republican State Central Committee and was part of the Louisiana delegation at the 2008 and 2012 Republican National Conventions. Her paternal grandfather was former Homer Mayor Harvey Hugh Emerson, Junior.
(1927-1999). On January 11, 2016, she succeeded outgoing Democrat Representative Stephen Ortego, whom she unseated in the primary election held on October 24, 2015.
Mission Emerson polled 6,149 votes (51 percent) to Ortego"s 5,902 (49 percent).
